Worked as a carpenter at age 16. Taught school from age 19 to 28. Representative in the State Legislature from 1846 to 1858. Re-elected 1878. Elected to State Senate in 1879 and was president of that body. Held the Office of Mayor ex-officio until vacancy was filled. Elected 1889 to Judge of Probate Court, Waldo County.
